Stress

Stress is never a good thing. It however is a common problem affecting all of us at one time or another in our lives. Stress management should be an integral part of your life.  The more stress you have the more it needs to be addressed.
Some people will not agree with the statement "Stress is never a good thing".
We don't say "I work well under stress ". Please see Pressure and stress below.

External stress can be a deadline, bills physical fitness or the mother in law coming.

Internal stress is how you feel, your self talk or what you see happening. If you don't meet that deadline or the bills are not paid.

What do you do to yourself to add even more pressure to the external?

Pressure and stress

We all have pressure we have to get up in the morning and go about our business. Without pressure nothing would get done.
Think about this you wake up have your breakfast porridge and orange juice (healthy eating helps manage stress).  You have to be at work for 09:00 so as the time ticks by the pressure builds for you to leave.  You leave on time to arrive at work before 09:00.

So Pressure helps us go to work, meet deadlines, keep and maintain our lifestyles. This pressure is constantly changing but is always there in one form or another. Maybe the cars broken down or the dog is ill, or maybe you get an unexpected bonus. More pressure less pressure but always some pressure.

When does pressure becomes stress?

Pressure becomes stress when it no longer invokes a positive reaction.

So you are on your way to work, the traffic is a bit heavier than normal, but that's ok you always leave a buffer period. There has been an unexpected road closure now and this will make you late.  So you either:

1. Realise you are going to be late, call ahead making the necessary arrangements to help the rest of your day run smoothly.

2. Put your foot down start getting agitated at every junction, lights or bus that is in your way. Maybe you shout at other road users or start to drive faster than the speed limit to arrive on time.

Number (1) is a reaction to pressure and invokes a positive action.

Number (2) is a reaction to stress unmanaged it may affect the rest of your day.

You can learn to manage stress and be more productive, happier and healthier.
